md5

md5 is a hashing function which generates a 128-bit hash value. Initially, it was set to be used as a cryptographic function, which means that it was meant to produce hash values that are cryptographically sound e.g. irreversible and unique, but this was found not to be so. Now, it is usually used to determine whether files have been modified by comparing their hash values e.g. of the file before and after download.
