OSI layers

The OSI model defines 7 layers which a message follows through as it moves from a software in one network to another. Each layer is tasked with a specific task. The 7 layers are:
7. Application layer – the layer where the human interacts with the application
6. Presentation layer – data format and encryption to make it readable
5. Session layer – Maintain connection and sessions while a transmission is in progress
4. Transport layer – Transmits data using TCP and UDP protocols
3. Network layer – Routes data packets across a network
2. Datalink layer – Defines format of data to be used while on transit
1. Physical layer – Transmits data packets over a physical medium
