Ukraine’s Cyber Shield: How “Tryzub” Resists Russian Attacks

The red team is the enemy.
They are in the room next door.

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russian hackers have carried out about 10,000 attacks in Ukraine, according to the State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection. And to counter them, online defenders must constantly improve their skills.

To increase the effectiveness of training, the Ukrainian government, together with an American private company, has launched a new service called “Tryzub.”

What is this platform? And how can Ukraine's experience in fighting in cyberspace be useful to the world?

We have a blue team here. This is the team that protects Ukraine from cyberattacks.

The red team is the enemy. They are in the room next door.

This is the red class. We are already teaching how to attack the blue team, which is defending.

Such a staged cyberwar at the training center of the State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection is part of the training of future cyberspace defenders. They must be able to assess the state of network security, quickly respond to challenges, and eliminate threats.

Svyatoslav Kostyuchenko, specialist of the Training Cyber Center of the State Center for Cyber Defense:

This all happens on a virtual cyber training ground, where a specific attack is simulated, based on real attack scenarios. We have a cyber trainer present at the training, who helps, guides, and explains.

Yevhen Briksin, specialist of the Computer Emergency Response Team of Ukraine:

This can be directed at critical infrastructure, more targeted – destructive attacks aimed at disabling technological processes, business processes. And espionage, cyber espionage is more directed at the government, local authorities and the security and defense sector.

Number of cyberattacks:

The enemy carries out thousands of cyberattacks on Ukraine every year. And their number is constantly increasing in wartime conditions, the State Special Communications Service reports.

To resist attacks, cyber specialists must constantly improve their skills, the State Service for Special Communications says. They are trying to make training for future and current specialists as effective as possible.

Oleksandr Potiy, Head of the State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine:

Previously, it was more of a training approach, where training scenarios or imaginary ones were developed. But it was in war conditions, in conditions of continuous influence of a real adversary, who is motivated, has a corresponding goal and exerts a negative impact on our systems, that this experience had to be integrated into the training ground.
During the war, Ukrainian cybersecurity experts learned to repel significantly more attacks by enemy hackers. To share their experience, together with a private international company with offices in the US, Britain, and Europe, specialists from the State Special Communications Service have developed a new training service called “Trident.” In particular, they offer two different scenarios for the development of events: combating espionage and countering targeted attacks on specific companies or institutions.

Marcello HinXman-Allegri, Head of Marketing and Business Development at CYBER RANGES:

We were looking for ways to enhance cybersecurity skills. We decided to create a new simulation of these attacks based on current cyber intelligence research. Therefore, collaboration with Ukraine was a natural fit. We combined the Ukrainian experience of Ukrainians fighting what was undoubtedly the first cyber war in history with the tools available on our platform. That is, we are not just sharing knowledge, we are enabling organizations, businesses, and governments to survive these attacks without real-world consequences.

Oleksandr Potiy, Head of the State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine:

We get new technologies and unique access to the cyber polygon, because we work together, we have such access. Through constant training of our specialists, our resilience and cyber defense capabilities are increasing. Ukraine acts here not as a consumer of only assistance, we are already contributors here, that is, we invest in common security, and this is the authority of the state, the image of the state.
